Lightweight, High Capacity

The Sony ICD-BP150 recorder is a fairly small, lightweight digital recorder that accommodates over 2 hours of standard speech-recognition-quality audio and uses a direct USB cable connection to transfer recordings to a computer. The ICD-BP150 includes Digital Voice Editor software that can access the recordings in the recorder's memory while it is connected to the computer.

In addition, a convenient e-mail feature allows recorder users to attach recordings to email messages along with a small freeware play-only application that allows other users to listen to the recordings on their PCs.

Sony has provided enhanced cue-and-review capabilities in this model to make it more convenient for users to back up a few seconds and record over sections of dictation without having to press a myriad of buttons.

The Digital Voice Editor software links directly to Dragon NaturallySpeaking Preferred and Professional (version 5 and newer), and allows users to select one or more recordings in the recorder, or in folders on the user's computer, then click the Transcribe button to launch NaturallySpeaking and begin typing.

Sound quality is clear enough to allow NaturallySpeaking users to feed recorded dictation into their existing headset User Profile without having to create a recorder-specific User Profile, although neither the Sony nor the NaturallySpeaking documentation provides any indication that this is possible.

Users who work with a secretary or transcriptionist may want to invest in two of these recorders so that they can drop off a "full" one and pick up an "empty" one without having to wait for files to be copied from the recorder to the secretary's computer.

Sony offers the WAVPedal Foot Controller and headset as an option so that transcriptionists can type while advancing and rewinding the recording with the footpedal. Recordings from the ICD-BP150 must be converted to 8-bit or 16-bit WAV format using the Digital Voice Editor software before they can be played back using the WAVPedal.
