For many with reading disabilities, college or university is a lofty and impractical ideal. Students who struggled throughout their high school years suddenly find themselves overwhelmed with volumes of reading, detailed reports, and impossible deadlines. Kim teaches at a community college and has worked with students with a wide variety of skill sets. Lately Kim has been seeing improvement in areas that she hasn't seen before.

Students can recognize essential information in their reading material by identifying and highlighting main ideas, and extracting information into a study outline using some of Kurzweil 3000 study skill tools. It also offers the ability to place "sticky notes" of any size anywhere on the page. Double clicking on them causes the system to read them aloud. The student friendly Kurzweil 3000 has turned out to be a great teaching partner for Kim and a great member of the community.

At 25, Sonja is a bit older than the average post-secondary student, but it doesn't bother her a bit. Sonja has ADD, and because of the disorder, was functionally illiterate until age 22. She couldn't read or write words more than three or four letters long, so reading was almost impossible without help. Today, with the Kurzweil 3000, she reads two books a week for pleasure in addition to her course work in nursing.
Reading was a nightmare for me. I think my folks got more out of my high school years than I did. Someone had to read with me all the time, so college was never much of an option. With this program, all that changed. Now, I can read anything I want, and really comprehend what it says."
