Hong Kong Heritage Museum, Hong Kong, China
Hong Kong's millennium museum project features the first interactive
children's gallery in China. The gallery explores themes of ecology,
conservation, archaeology and the historic Hong Kong way of life.
The time line for completing this project was exceptional.
The team of three designers went from initial concept to tender
drawings in 5 months. The project ran 24 hours a day due to the
time differences with the client in Hong Kong.
Where we needed precise results, we provided technical
drawings. When there was flexibility in production methods, we used
hand sketches. The resulting gallery was on budget and virtually
identical to the tender package.
First hand experience of the city helped ensure
accuracy during the exhibit development process. I visited the Mai
Po Marsh, a World Wildlife Federation site in Hong Kong, as well
as traditional Haka houses that would have been prominent in the
city 100 years ago. These form two of the theme areas of the gallery.
AMAzing Space offers a youth art gallery based on AMA's permanent
collection of sub-Saharan African art, folk art and sporting art.
It is the only such facility of its kind in the Southeast U.S.
The exhibits are designed to challenge the traditional
ideals of art as defined by the western world.
The "Party House" groups several activities
under one roof. Visitors print a card, decorate a cake with magnetic
objects and do puzzles from collection images. The gallery can be
booked for private parties as an extra source of revenue for the
museum.
