Caring for Your
Solid Wood Door
The most important
step to ensure a long life and lasting beauty for your door is to
prime it and paint it as soon as it is installed. A quality finish
is essential to protect your door from the degrading effects of
moisture, wind, heat and cold.
Your warranty will be voided if the door is not properly
finished, so please be sure to review these instructions for
finishing and maintaining your door. Instructions are also included
with your door when it is shipped. |
- After the door is
trimmed and hung, remove the hinge pins to take down the door
for finishing. If you plane or trim your door after finishing,
these edges must be refinished.
- Lightly sand the
entire surface with 150 grit sandpaper and remove all dust with
a tack cloth or slightly damp rag. Now the door is ready to be
painted.
- We recommend finishing
with a good quality oil-based primer and paint for best protection
from the elements. Consult your paint dealer for recommendations
on the best exterior-grade paints. Apply
- two coats of oil-based primer and then
- two coats of oil-based paint.
- Finish all six
sides and edges of the door. Typical of all wood products,
your door is subject to swelling and shrinkage with changes in
temperature and humidity. Sealing ALL surfaces will minimize these
effects. Remember, even if you can't see a poorly finished edge,
moisture can!
- Inspect your door's
finish at least once a year and refinish as necessary. Usually,
a light sanding and touch-up will be sufficient. If your screen
becomes damaged, remove the panel and have the screen replaced.
