Pat Hentgen receives the A.L. Cy Young award in 1996!
|
Pat had a career year in '96, certainly pitching well enough to win his first Cy. Andy Petitte of the New York
Yankees also had an impressive year. While others waited for the final ballots to be tabulated, Hentgen's
faithful fans knew he had the edge. Sure enough when the voting was announced Pat had edged out Andy Petitte
to capture the coveted American League Cy Young in one of the tighter Cy Young races in years.
1996 was a memorable year for Pat.
He became the second Blue Jay pitcher to join the 20 win club, the first being Jack Morris in 1992. Hentgen was
also amongst the league leaders in several categories. He lead the American League in complete games with 10
and in the number of innings pitched with 265.2. Pat also finished second in the American League in E.R.A. and
in wins. Pat was also captured the A.L. pitcher of the month honours in both July and August!

come in second. I was a little shocked. I think I'm overwhelmed right now."

did not get a chance to pitch in the game itself.
Hentgen was amongst three Blue Jays who went to the 1994 All Star game in Pittsburgh. Teammates Roberto Alomar and
Paul Molitor both accompanied Pat. Hentgen shined in relief, pitching one inning while allowing only one hit.
