WHOSE BODY?

As I move from the known (slides of tissue cross-sections and patterns of ice and water) to the unknown (the structure of the developing breathing chambers of the embryological lungs) by means of iconic or analogical modelling it is important not to slip into such easy dualisms as science vs. art, mind over body.

Modelling the embryonic body by hand interiorized an understanding of shape-changing.

X-ray research is essential to understanding the body represented technologically.

Tattoos on the artist's arms: A performance to encourage public dialogue and discussion of the social and cultural dimensions of this project.

An arteriogram: a photographic tool to analyse the growth patterns of the circulation in the lungs.

This electron scanning micrograph of lung tissue was made two years after my models were complete. It confirms my structural predictions.
