The patterns visible in the embryological lung tissue reminded me of something strangely familiar. It required more than a year to make the necessary association. The realization was surpising. The patterns of embryological lung cells looked very like the patterns created by ice forming on an arctic lake, and the formations of waves at the edges of the ice, patterns poised between the organic (natural?) and the mathematical (cultural?). I had photographed these patterns when I was living in the Canadian arctic. |
