Stabiles is an interesting minimalist techno debut from the American producer who has had previous releases on Tresor and Cristian Vogel's Mosquito label. Walker is a current fave of Richie Hawtin, who includes him on his new mixed cd, Decks, EFX & 909. Stabiles is named after the sculptures of Alexander Calder, who's curving, abstract metal creations are displayed outdoors in cities like Montreal, Berlin and Paris. Walker's minimalist sound sculptures are more clubby on his 12" releases, but here he takes a page from Hawtin's use of deceptively sparse and static formations that reveal a subtle evolution on closer inspection. "Classic Science Fiction" may sound like classic Plastikman, but over the length of Stabiles, Walker uses different timbres for his rhythms, from metallic to warm, that give each track a unique mood.
