You may have been lucky enough to catch Purple Penguin turntablist Scott Hendry as he blew up live gigs in Toronto and Montreal with the band's Ben Dubuisson last spring. Now one of Hendry's sets of jazzy hip-hop has been baked for home use. The majority of the 21 tracks are from Cup Of Tea releases, with several vinyl-only remixes appearing on CD for the first time (including Purple Penguin's remix of the Federation's dubby "See Through"). Turbo Beats also previews tracks from COT's new Upper Cut label for American-style hip-hop. Ninja Tune's Herbaliser makes a couple of appearances, with their remix of Invisible Pair Of Hands' "Sloppy's Not Sloppy Any More" and their latest off-shoot Nightbulb's '60s-style Hammond funk "Bionic Zombie Priest." Hendry begins with down-tempo cuts featuring strings and pianos from Finger and Receiver, before moving on to the rap and the funk. There is also a bit of the drum & bass in the form of Bristolian remixers Flynn & Flora (Statik Sound System's "Essential Times") and Reprazent's DJ Suv (Jaz Klash's "Thru The Haze"). But it isn't long until the funky breaks return and tracks like the Runaway's "Brockwild Remix" of Purple Penguin's "Apollo" and Lionrock's remix of Slick Sixty's "Wrestler" get things rockin'. You get a good taste of most tracks and a chance to experience the party scratched up regularly by Hendry at Bristol's Blue Mountain Club.
