This extremely inexpensive compilation should be your next gift to yourself. You've never heard of any of these Japanese trip-hop and drum & bass producers (unless you have DJ Vadim's Sculptures and Broken Sound compilation) but now their secret is out. The best of them mix warm acoustic elements with their sampled breaks in the manner of former Mo Wax-er Palm Skin Productions. Especially Cappablack's down-tempo noir track "Niji's Hierograffiti" which alternates bytes of temple bells and cellos for a vibe reminiscent of Palm Skin's The Beast EP. After the brooding, abstract intro of Suzukishki's "Tunnels" you are immersed in the glowing acoustic guitar layers and swinging junglist back beat of Montage's "Expressa" (from the Mixology CD recently licensed by Sub Rosa). Taichi also is one to bring a soft light to old school jazz during "The Ultimate Preference." There is a harder edge to this collection too, as drill-ish chaos invades the Reprazent-style hard jazz of Riow Arai's "Wandering" and thumb & snapping "So Back!!!" The only down-side to all this wonderful music is that it is going to cost you much more to enjoy the rest of the Soup-Disk catalogue.
