Simm is Italian musician Eraldo Bernocchi, who's been dragged down into the depths of dark hop in the wake of his collaborations with Scorn's Mick Harris and Bill Laswell (in Somma). The three of them are Equations Of Eternity (on WordSound), which is the closest thing to a supergroup this most underground of hip-hop styles can find. Bernocchi brings his long experience with electronics to these sessions, being a member of the industrial group Sigillum S (since 1985), and creating atmospheric moods in his solo project Ashes. As Simm, he recorded a twelve-inch and this album for Harris's Possible Records, which has now been released with two new tracks by Invisible Records in the U.S. The vibe of cuts like "Frozen Chances" and "These Days-Stalker Mix" is bleak and eerie, as the zombie-paced breaks are illuminated by creepy synth sounds and haunted melodies from treated guitar. Underlying these catatonic grooves are bass drones so low they require you to install sub-woofers in your crypt. Like the new generation of travelling minstrels in the company of Mr Laswell, Eraldo has lots of music on the go, and you can expect his collaboration with trumpeter Toshinori Kondo on Innerhythmic soon.
