Memory Ground is a new version of this amazing ritual-ambient group's live recording of the San Francisco date at the end of their 1991 tour of North America. This show was previously released as Sound Column by Extreme in 1993, and now features an additional 11 minutes of music.

John Dubiel and I produced the Toronto show on that tour, which was more rhythmic and upbeat than this more meditative performance when the duo of percussionist Eddy Sayer and didgeridoo player Stephen Kent was joined by Vancouver flautist/soundscaper Kenneth Newby. These three were actually the original lineup of Lights, as Newby had been the first musician to jam with Sayer and Kent when they had begun to play in England, before making their 1988 debut album with Simon Tassano. I don't know how many performances they did as a trio on the West coast before this show in 1991, but Kent seems to be leaving space over his mesmerising didg drone for Newby to lead with his evocative flute lines. The newly released piece "Night Journey" is a good example of the two searching for a harmonious relationship, becoming, in moments over the seven minutes, a rich parallel drone.

Soon afterwards, Eddy Sayer returned to England (where he is now a member of Stillpoint, as well as practising music therapy), leaving Kent, Newby and others to become Trance Mission. Both also have solo albums from City Of Tribes, which are all highly recommended.
