From his Function 8 label comes San Franciscan Jamie Kahn's Gadget band. A long time drummer and hip-hopper (not to mention sound engineer and multimedia programmer) Jamie's debut single features three tracks and a couple of remixes. Like The Jazz Cannon release on Function 8, the emphasis in Gadget is for live playing and a live-in-the-studio sound. Kahn's slow funky beats combine with Tommy Guerrero's low bass line and Billy Cote's fuzzed guitar blues for the Mo Wax-ian groove "Black Acura" and it's "Low Profile Mix." Mordred's drummer tries a different style on the slower "Wide Open" that can be compared to the horror movie-sampling Spectre for its screams and scratched MC. Its "Low Down Mix" gets even scarier as the Middle Eastern violin is joined by a pack of howling wolves.
