Brume is French industrialist Christian Renou, whose many releases of textural experimentation can be compared to Britain's Nocturnal Emissions or American Randy Greif. Unusual sound sources like air ducts and high tension lines are a regular part of his musique concrete-style pieces. Normal is a conceptual work with references to the neuro sciences in track titles such as "Split Brain Part 1/2" and "L-Dopa" (the drug that Oliver Sacks used to cure the "frozen" people in Awakenings). Spoken word samples from what seem like therapy sessions are placed amidst dislocated environments of noise and rhythms. One of these lost patients says "I just want to go home that's all" during the 14-minute track on memory, "Landed." And "Korsakov Syndrome" refers to a form of alcohol-induced amnesia, which on Normal becomes a confused track of guttural utterances. This fascinating release by Brume is like a science lesson and its soundtrack, and really succeeds in putting the research aspect back into the "industrial" project.
