South Africa is currently experiencing one of the most rapidly progressing HIV epidemics in the world. HIV prevalence among prenatal clinic attendees has increased twenty-fold over the past eight years.

In South Africa, nearly 24 percent of all women attending prenatal clinics are HIV positive. Without intervention, 40 percent of these women will pass the virus on to their babies.
