Diamond Comes Home
Part 1

Diamond, the cat, wasn't very happy.

He couldn't remember when he arrived at the house but for a long time everything was wonderful. The little girl gave him lots of food and love and attention and the grown-ups also made sure that he was well cared for.

But the little girl had gotten bigger and she had very little time left for Diamond and the grown-ups were always arguing or yelling at him. So now he often went hungry and his litter box was seldom cleaned. Several times there was nobody to let him in at night so he had to spend the night outside.

"Well," said Diamond, "I think it's time to be on the lookout for a better place to live.

So, the next time Diamond was let out he went much further than normal looking for open doors and friendly voices. It wasn't easy for it seemed that these places always had a cat living there already and none of them wanted company.

Diamond knew that he was starting to get weak from being neglected and not getting enough to eat so one night he stayed away from home really late. And what luck! A door opened up with a blond lady at the door and when Diamond went up to the door, the lady stood aside and said, "Come on in, sweetheart".

As soon as Diamond was inside the lady headed for the kitchen and, although it wasn't real cat food, prepared a wonderful bowl of milk for him with some extra good stuff in it and the lady talked to him and cuddled him afterwards. The man in the house was also really friendly and nice but it was the lady who made the big fuss.

When bedtime came they went upstairs and the lady put some soft things on the floor but Diamond jumped up on the bed instead. "No, no," said the lady, "you have to sleep on the floor" and with that she lifted him down again. Of course he just jumped right back up and this time the lady just chuckled, said, "You win" and turned off the light. So Diamond happily cuddled in the warm soft spot between the lady and the man.

Diamond slept for 8 hours. He had not slept in such a quiet place for years.

But then he started getting hungry and got up, walked to the head of the bed and nudged the blond lady. She woke up with a smile and a hug for Diamond and got up right away and went downstairs.

She then went outside and closed the door and Diamond started getting worried. But she came back with parcels in a few minutes and now Diamond got some really wonderful cat food and the lady found a tray that she filled with cat litter so Diamond knew that he was welcome.

That night two more people arrived with big suitcases but they turned out to be friendly too especially the man who seemed to like having Diamond lie next to him. He didn't even get upset if Diamond took his seat whenever the man got up.

Diamond was very happy.
