Some Images of Italy

[Side Street in Milan]This Image (In Milan, Italy) is meant to depict a typical view of a cathedral from a tiny street.
Milan (It. Milano) is in Northern Italy, in the province of Lombardy (Lombardia in Italian)

Milan is a very busy and active italian city, being the capital of Italian commerce and fashion.
As well as offering much Italian culture (both ancient and contemporary) it is the locale of a lot of Italy's businesses.
Some say however, that the business side of Milan is most prominent at the expanse of its culture. (I do not know since I have never been there (except to the airport)).

[Medieval Castle][Same castle different technique]
[Still another rendidtion of the castle]
The three illustrations above all depict the same castle (but for variety and effect, I chose different ways to express the characteristic of the structure.

The castle, called "La Rocca" (translation: The Rock) is situated on the road leading to the small village of Assisi (See below for a more comprehensive discussion concerning Assisi)It is a very rugged and impressive fortress, built in the Medieval times.

Many similar castles/fortresses can be seen throughout Italy.

Their main objective was to act as protection for the villages/towns and cities on whose outskirts they were situated.
Medeival times were a time of pillaging and wars.

[A small Cloister in Assisi]
The above image is meant to illustrate the Cloister I believe in a monastery, in Assisi.

Assisi, In the province of Umbria, is perhaps best known as the home and the buriel place of Saint Francis of Assisi, the Patron Saint of animals.
He is buried in the Basilica di San Francesco (Translation: The Church of Saint Francis)(One can even see his actual coffin!)

Assisi has all the charm to offer. It holds on to its ancient culture much to the delight of the tourist/traveller.

Unfortunately, in late 1997, Assisi was the victim of a disasterous series of earthquakes which caused severe damage to the village as well as to the famous Basilica.

Assisi housed many many ancient artifacts as well as fragile ancient buildings; unfortunately it has been estimated that many are beyond the state of repair. At the time of this writing, the Basilica is closed to the public. But much of the charms and gifts that Assisi had to offer are saved in pictures.
