Normally shy, nocturnal creatures, this rare photo captures Rob, Colin and Andrew enjoying a favorite summertime pursuit! When not fishing for trout these hardy sportsmen are fishing for business!
Way back when, we had a whole bunch of these crazy postcards made up, as part of an advertising campaign for The A.V. Works. The idea was to send them out to advertisers, corporate
media producers -- folks in the trade, basically, -- for the purpose of rustling up business.
So, every year -- for FIVE years -- we sent them out. We sent out over six hundred of them EACH YEAR. And -- wait for it -- we addressed and signed each and every one by hand, for that personal touch. Talk about writer's cramp!
People loved them (let's face it, they're pretty cool) but ... we got absolutely, positively ZILCH work from them! (Which was also totally cool, since we were swamped with work anyway. Come to think of it, what in heck were we thinking of?!)
And, as we all know, the most important part of a campaign like this is the follow-up call. So, of course, we started making our follow-up calls.
O.K., this is where our story kinda breaks down. After ten whole extremely arduous minutes on the phone of trying to get hold of the people to whom we sent these cards, we...gave...up.
It was nerve wracking! If they got the card, they'd say, "Oh, yes, we got your postcard, it's great." After that, the conversation sorta died down ...
If they hadn't received the card yet, the conversation was even worse! What was there to say? "Well, we sent you a very colourful, funny card, and um, well ..."
And that was that. Since most people really did like the cards, we repeated the whole rigamarole every year, and kept sending out the cards ...with one exception: we never made one follow-up call again. Nuts, huh?
We still have plenty of these groovy little mementos lying around, so we figured
we'd show them to you.
