History of the DCM

The Democratic Coalition of Montreal (DCM) was founded in 1990 by City Councillors and citizens with years of experience in Montreal municipal politics who felt that the existing political parties were not working to put into effect progressive social change in Montreal's government.

The DCM has focussed on three facets of municipal politics:

  1. democratization and decentralization of decision-making;
  2. progressive social policies in the City's programs, and
  3. an environmentally sound approach to urban development.

Now the second oldest municipal party, the DCM has been represented at City Council by five different councillors. In 1991 the DCM won an important by-election. For parts of 1991, 1992 and 1994, the DCM was the Official Opposition at City Council. In 1994, the DCM entered into a federation with another municipal party, Ecology Montreal, to form the Democratic Coalition - Ecology Montreal. In 1998 members of the Ecology Montreal component of the party decided to withdraw from active electoral politics and the party name was re-established as the DCM.
