Based on a late-model Reynard 97I briefly
tested by Marlboro team Penske, this model was constructed using the main
components of the Reynard 98I, ans subsequently retro-fitted to 1997 specifications.
The model pictured is the only one in existence; having principally
been built as a display piece and chosen for its aesthetic values: the
clean, simple balance of color and design of the Marlboro livery contrasting
greatly with the cluttered, sponsor-intense design typical of the Target
car.
Unlike the current-generation Reynard-Penske hybrids, dubbed "Renske"
by members of the CART circle, this particular car was not outwardly altered
or fitted with special custom-parts, but rather was tested in virtually
box-stock form: the goal of which was to give Team Penske a reference-point
from which to evaluate the shortcomings of their PC-26, and ensure that
the up-coming PC-27 compared favourably with the all-conquering Reynard
chassis.
The photos contained herein catalogue the major aspects of the
genuine race car, and offer explanations and insight into the building
of this particular model.
