THE HAGERMAN FAMILY TREE

(Most information as copied from the files

In 1970 a start was made at collecting records of the
Hagerman Family of which I am a member. There was not much
information to start with - so much digging was involved.
The old Family Bible gave me the first information. These
records took me back to Great Grandad Henry Larue Hagerman
and his wife and children. It took several years to get
from there back two more generations. To date over 350
cemeteries were searched for Hagerman stones and any related
names. I have not found GGGdad, his wife, or GGGgd's burying
place or markers. Aunt Arlissa who passed away last year
helped with some of the names. Lela Wilson ( now deceased)
gave me poetry written by Great Grandad also some pages from
an account book in Cobourg. The services of a professional
researcher in Ottawa was enlisted but proved almost useless.
A later one was more successful. John Hagerman Sr. was a
U.E.L. as was his younger brother Tunis. A couple of days were
spent in the P.A.C. at Ottawa and more was learned. The
Ontario Archives were visited several times and much was
gained here. Census records on micro film were ordered
through the Library and viewed on their viewer. This proved
other dates on record. A Help Wanted Enquiry was placed in
O.G.S. paper and a reply was received from a Mrs.David
Shepherd in Dunn Loring V.A. who provided records of John
Hagerman Sr. his wife and Family. Another query in
"Families" brought a reply from a Mrs. Helen Schmid of
Orono who had just completed writing a book "Out of the
Mists" a History of Clark Tp. While researching for her
book she came across a book "Jaques Leroux and some of his
descendants" which gave John Hagerman Jr. and his wife Mary
Larue and family. The owner of this book Mrs. Jennie
Richardson of Orono very kindly let me copy parts of this
book for my records. Some info on some of Great Grandad's
brothers is still missing and may never be found.

Land records were consulted in Registry offices in
Brockville, Belleville, Colborne, Cobourg, Port Hope,
Bowmanville etc. and turned other branches of the Hagerman
family that I had not know of before. Surrogate court was
visited in Brockville but no great help here. I did learn
that GGGd had died intestate and Mary had to get permission
to dispose of the estate. Many books have been perused and
these have been recorded under the heading of References.
Personal visits have been made where possible and records
enlarged to include other branches in the hopes of sometime
finding a tie between them. At this time April 1982 there
are well over 4027 names on record. Over half of these are
of the Hagerman name. In addition there are Hagermans who
have not found a limb to hang from - so these are listed
as Floaters.

JOHN HAGERMAN SR. (U.E.)(abt.1747-1813)

John Hagerman Sr. was a United Empire Loyalist - he lived
in New York State near Poughkeepsie. It is now believed
he had at least one sibling, Tunis Hagerman (UE).
Perhaps his parents were John Hegeman/Hagerman and Jannetje
(Bergen).(has yet to be proved).
