HOW DO I...?
MAINTAINING THE DATA FILE

CHECK THE INTEGRITY OF THE DATA FILE

Over time, the main data file may become corrupt or fragmented, which could lead to slower performance or, in a worst case scenario, data loss. Checking the integrity of the data file periodically will ensure that it is in prime working condition.

1 Make sure that there exists a backup copy of your data file that is relatively recent.

2 Under the Administration sub-menu, select Data File Utilities. This will bring up the Data File Management window.

3 Check the Perform repairs option if you wish the program to automatically re-write the data file as it sees fit to repair any corruption encountered. Otherwise, the program will prompt the user whenever errors are encountered and ask if repairs should be done.

4 Click the button that corresponds to the feature you wish to use.

There are three choices:

The Quickcheck option will scan over the data file to make sure that there are no errors.

The Checkdata will scan all data records and make sure that each data element is not corrupt. This is a more comprehensive diagnostic than the Quickcheck. Please note that the Checkdata function should not be interrupted, and may take a long time for large data files. Because of this, it is recommended that Checkdata be used only when there is ample opportunity to do so.

Reorganize will re-construct the data file, and should only be used whenever a new version of MIRROR is installed and is using a data file saved under a previous version.

5 When complete, the checking process displays a summary in a window entitled, Check Data Log. If any problems appear here, click on the Repair button to cause the program to begin correcting them. Otherwise, simply close this window.
