A few years ago, I wanted to mark a family anniversary and, being canny, thought it would be nice if I could find something in the MacCallum family tartan. I was very specific about my requirements and thought a high quality woollen clan blanket would fit the bill. Only requiring 3 blankets as gifts, it seemed simple...until I actually tried to buy them!!! I tried numerous shops, none of whom could offer the high quality finish I demanded. So, frustrated, I got in direct contact with a Scottish woollen mill that I had been told would make a blanket to the quality I required. Having tracked the blankets down I was further frustrated by being informed that, whilst the quality was not a problem, the blankets, being hand made to order, required a minimum purchase of 30! I had already gone to that trouble to find the quality I desired so thought.."Why not? At least it means I'll never be cold again!" I duly place my order and waited some weeks for the blankets to arrive, which eventually they did. (All credit to the woollen mill. They warned me that quality of the sort I demanded would take time and indeed it did...about 4 weeks to be precise.) And the quality was outstanding. Rich, thick woollen blankets in MY clan's tartan! I was knocked out by the quality as were my relatives who raved about them. But, as you've guessed, I was at a bit of a loss to know what to do with the unused part of the order....
And then inspiration struck! 27 hand made, high quality woollen blankets in the MacCallum tartan sat in my living room. My husband, whilst sympathetic, wondered how much longer we were going to live in a warehouse! (They were BIG blankets!) My hand turned to the London telephone directory and looked up the MacCallums entries... Over 75 in the London directory alone! Well, in for a penny, in for a (Scottish) pound!!
