Candle Lighting Liturgy:    The Neubert Family

Voice:  Today is the first Sunday of Advent, the Sunday of Hope.

Voice:  Our hope is in God, and in his son Jesus Christ.  He is the one appointed by God to be judge of all things.  He is the one

through whom God has promised to save and redeem his people.

Voice:  We light this candle today to remind us that he is our hope and the hope of the world.  We thank God for the promises he has made to us and for the light he has brought into the world.

Light the First Candle

Voice:   Let us pray together:  O God of Hope, Emmanuel, God with us – we pray you to send your light into our hearts at this time.  Help us to be ready for the day and the hour of Christ’s final appearing.  Live in us and help us to live in you.

(Sung Response)   Tune:  Stuttgart   (2 VU)

Come, O child of peace among us

Come and dwell within us here.

            Turn our weapons into ploughshares,

With your peace dispel our fear.

Hymn of Praise:            6   A Candle is Burning

Prayer of Approach and Confession:(in unison)   (seated)

Creator God, you are the Giver of Life, you have shaped us like clay and we are the work of your hands.  In this time and space, we call on your name!  Renew us in hope, help us to be alert to your coming that we may grow in love for one another and for all, just as we grow in love for you.  Stir up our hearts, we beseech you O God, to prepare ourselves to receive your Son.  When he comes and knocks, may he find us not sleeping in sin, but awake to righteousness, ceaselessly rejoicing in his love.  May our hearts and minds be so purified that we may be ready to receive his promise of eternal life.

God of hope, you crafted us as a potter crafts clay into things that are useful, important, and beautiful.  sometimes, we forget your intention for us, we make choices that hurt ourselves or others.  At the

beginning of this new year and throughout this Advent season, we ask your help, O God, to live as you would have us live, so that we may be prepared to welcome your Child, Jesus, among us.   Amen.
