French CEGEP program aimed at newcomers

BY BARBARA LAVOIE

Even though many new Canadians have learned French as a second language, they still find improving their career prospects a challenge in Quebec.

To bridge this gap, Collège Gérald-Godin is launching a new program, Language, Quebec Society and New Technologies this September at the CEGEP’s West Island campus located on Boulevard des Sources.

The accredited educational program was designed and developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration to help newcomers take a further step toward achieving their job and career goals.

In particular, the program hopes to meet the needs of newcomers who are already employed but want to get a better job or who plan to further their career opportunities by studying at a post-secondary level in French.

Program coordinator Manon Bélanger explained, “The courses are offered in the evening and on Saturday so students can continue to work. We want newcomers to gain the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in today’s workforce.”

A 120-hour work placement following completion of the series of courses in June 2004 will be arranged with local employers for all students. Bélanger added, “Over the years, the Collège has worked with many employers to put in place successful work placements. We expect to have many opportunities for these students too. “

Students will focus their efforts on three key areas of study improving their French language communication skills, developing career strategies for better integration into professional life in the province, and learning how to use computers and other new technologies.

“This program builds bridges between work, further studies, and integration into Quebec society,” noted Isabelle Gingras, the program’s French teacher. “It provides immigrants with some much-needed Canadian work experience and helps them make contact with employers.”

For each session, students may register on a part-time basis for one or two courses or on full-time basis for all three courses. Full-time students receive free instruction through a financial subsidy provided by Emploi-Québec.

Registration is now underway. The first course begins on September 10. The program accepts new Canadians who have completed a secondary school diploma or equivalent and who can study in French at an intermediate level.
