From Probability to Feeling:

A Medical Hypothesis

of Emotion

Dr. M.D.S.

"Green is defined as the colour seen when the light used ranges from 495 - 515 angstrom units in wave length. For emotions we still lack an analogue to the wave theory of light."
Lewin, B., 1965

The Problem

What is an emotion?

Is there an external entity -- some fundamental, elemental, measurable aspect of outer reality -- that is linked to each primary subjective feeling ?
Could there be a causal train which begins with a perturbation of this aspect of outer reality and ends with an internal subjective feeling?

Could dysregulation in such a causal train-- dysregulation in any of its beginning, middle or end mechanisms -- be a common denominator in the etiology of certain aspects of DSM IV disorders?

Could the controlled calibrated experimental use of the originating process of such a causal chain --a measurable aspect of fundamental reality -- be harnessed to trace the pathways of psychobiological mechanisms in the etiology of Affective Disorders, Schizophrenias and Anxiety Disorders, and to probe the comparative efficacies of biopsychological interventions ?
