Dichroic Glass Jewellery

Dichroic Glass (meaning more than one colour) is a multi layer coating placed on glass by using a vacuum deposition process. Quartz Crystal & Metal ( Titanium ) Oxides are vaporized with a electron beam gun in a airless vacuumed chamber...the vapor floats upward & condenses on the surface of the glass in the form of crystals. Each pendant may have as many as 30 layers of these materials...yet the thickness of a total coating is about 35 millionths of an inch. The coating created is very similar to a gemstone...the resulting colours are determined by the thickness of oxide that is deposited on the glass ...all dichroic glass coatings are made by exactly the same materials. Dichroics have a transmitted colour & a completely different reflective colour, furthermore these 2 colours shift depending on angle of view. play of light together with vibrant colour makes your one of a kind pendant completely original.
I have taken this fabulous material ( cut & shaped ) then fused layers of those pieces in a 1500 degree kiln for about 12 hours...as the piece cools it is annealed ( this is a hardening process that makes it highly resilient to damage ) in the end it comes out of my kiln with a beautiful fire polished finish.
The piece is then cold worked (drilled) and set in sterling silver.
My Dichroic pieces should be treated like any other piece of valued jewellery, just wear & enjoy.
